Edwardsville, Illinois, May 21 (Bloomberg) -- An Illinois jury awarded $34.1 million Friday to a man who claimed he got cancer after working with asbestos at a Shell Oil Co. refinery, the Associated Press reported. Attorneys for James Hutcheson, 64, who was employed at a company that did roofing work at a Shell Refinery in Illinois in the 1950s and 1960s, alleged Shell knew as early as 1945 that asbestos causes cancer, though it did nothing to warn workers of the danger. A Shell spokeswoman countered that the verdict ``is not supported by the facts or law,'' and said the company plans to appeal, AP said.
Shell is the U.S. arm of Royal Dutch/Shell Group.
